Ghanaian Mother Smashes Daughter’s Head With Hammer

A 36-YEAR-OLD nursing mother has found herself in the grips of the Nungua Police for smashing her 15-year-old daughter’s head with a hammer for disobeying her.  The suspect, Juliet Aboagyewaa, who resides at Nungua with her husband and four children, was said to have left the other three children in the care of the victim when she went to visit her sister.    She however returned home only to realize that the victim was not at home and this made her angry. When the 15-year-old returned home, the mother started beating her up and hit the head with a hammer. Immediately the mother saw that the daughter was bleeding, she stopped and went to bed without attending to her.  The victim was said to have been bleeding uncontrollably when she arrived at the police station. Information gathered indicated that the victim’s biological father travelled when she was still a baby and never returned to her or the mother.  Speaking to Daily Guide, the Assistant Superintendent of Police, Margaret S. Agbemabiese, who is the Head of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit, said on June 19, the victim, accompanied by two other persons, reported at the DOVVSU office with blood oozing out from a deep cut on her head.  The victim reported that her own mother, at about 9:00pm that same day, had hit her several times on the head with a hammer, without any provocation. Due to the gravity of the victim’s condition, the police went with her to the house to get someone to quickly take her to the hospital. When they got to the house however, the mother was fast asleep.  ASP Agbemabiese noted that when they woke the mother up, she told the police that she only beat the victim for defying her orders, but denied using a hammer. The mother was arrested while the victim was rushed to the hospital for treatment. ASP Agbemabiese added that the mother, because of her daughter’s condition, was later released to go to the hospital to take care of the victim.  She was however rearrested when the victim was released from the hospital.  In an interview with the accused, she said she did not use a hammer but beat the victim and hit her head on the wall because she was very angry at her daughter for disobeying her.  She added that she suspected that the victim had gone to see her boyfriend because her other children had told her that the 15-year-old left the house immediately after she left for her sister’s.  She explained that she only wanted to prevent her daughter from getting pregnant.  Speaking to the victim, she noted that she did not have a boyfriend and that she went to the wash room, only to return to find out that one of her siblings had also left the house.  Suspecting that the sibling had gone to a party nearby, she decided to go after her as she did not want her mother to get angry upon returning home. However, she got back home only to realize that both her sister and mother had returned.  The victim stated that the mother had locked the main gate so she sat outside for some time until the accused finally opened the gate and started hitting her on the knee, shoulder, and then finally on the head with the hammer, adding that when the accused saw her bleeding, she stopped and went to bed.

Church bans chieftaincy titles, wedding for pregnant women

Umuahia – The Diocese of Amichi, Anglican Communion, has banned new couples from celebrating church wedding before their traditional engagement.
Couples in Igboland often fixed both church and traditional weddings on the same day to save cost. But the Bishop of the Diocese in Anambra State, Rt. Rev. Ephraim Ikeakor, disagreed with the arrangement, and banned the practise.
Ikeakor, who also banned wedding celebration for pregnant ladies, also declared as unacceptable the conferment on its members with Ozo title, especially those already admitted into Knighthood.



Bishop Ikeakor, who announced these measures at the 3rd Session of the First Synod of the Diocese at Unubi, Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State, also banned its members from collecting goods on credit on behalf of the church during harvest ceremonies as well as shooting of dane guns during burial and funeral rites.
He said: "It is becoming almost a tradition for church members to come early in the morning for church wedding and, thereafter, in the evening go for traditional marriage ceremony. This is unacceptable in this Diocese.
"The church should be the last port of call for any marriage involving our members. No clergy man in this Diocese should be involved in conducting church wedding before traditional marriage.
We have also observed with shame and dismay the and ungodly practise of conducting weddings for pregnant ladies in our churches. This is both unChristian and un-Anglican.
"We will no longer allow the unregenerate members of our church to set some unwholesome precedence and standard in the Church.
"In as much as we thank God for the gift of pregnancy, we ought not to put the cart before the horse."

Flood kills 7 in Kano

No fewer than six persons were feared dead while several others were injured in Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State yesterday morning, following the collapse of a number of houses as a result of a torrential downpour that fell all through the night.

In all, about 27 houses collapsed leading to the displacement of about 300 persons. The injured persons, it was gathered, were rushed to the Murtala Mohammed Hospital and Nassarawa Hospital. According to the Director of Operation of the state Fire Service, Alhaji Kassim Musa, six persons died, 150 were rescued while 27 houses were destroyed in the devastating tragedy.

He blamed the tragedy on the collapse of a badly managed gutter, which connected Kwarin Gogau and Fagge area in the metropolis. Alhaji Kassim said they sent their personnel to the scene of the incidence after receiving a distress call, adding that they had a challenging time rescuing those trapped in the flood. Also, the downpour in Lagos caused tragedy as erosion killed a young man at Alhaja Bus Stop, Idimu, opposite NIPCO filling station in Alimosho Local Government Area.

The man, whose name was given as Kabiru, was later found dead by the Lagos State Fire Service crew.
He was said to have tried to be his brother’s keeper by rescuing a motorbike popularly known as Okada that fell into a gulley. According to an eyewitness, who prefers anonymity, the Okada rider parked the bike by the road side waiting for the rain to stop, but his bike fell into a deep gutter-like carnal.

To his surprise, Kabiru, a 30-year-old, who was standing by the side of the gutter, decided to rescue the bike from the gutter. The owner of the bike reportedly told him to leave it that he will retrieve it himself, after the rain.
Daily Sun gathered that Kabiru was adamant and it was in that instance that a fast moving car splashed water on Kabiru and while trying to escape, he fell inside the gutter and immediately he was drowned.

About 20 minutes later, Lagos State Fire Service with registration number LA 148A40, came to the scene of the incident following a disress call of sympathizers and swung into action and the corpse was found about two kilometers away.

Kabiru, who lost his father last year, was a native of Ogun State.
The father of one of the deceased persons in Kano, Alhaji Abbas Ado said: “When the water first stormed the downstairs of my house, we transferred the children to the upstairs, but minutes later, the building crave in and two of my children died.” He said he is currently squatting in a neighbour’s house even as he declared that he had lost everything to the flood.

He appealed to the state government to come to his aid. Those who were reported dead were Hadiza Labaran, Binta Labaran, Bashir Labaran, Aisha Labaran, Abubakar Abbas and Yusuf Abbas. There were also reports of flood in some other areas of the state capital such as Badawa and Kurna Quarters, but the extent of destruction could not be ascertained as at press time.
