More information has surfaced regarding the baby scandal that we reported a fourth night ago on this website see. In what seems like a well orchestrated effort, Dr Hyacinth Orikara had carried out the illegal business of buying and selling babies to childless couples and, possibly, ritualists. He opened a hospital called Heda Clinic in 2007 and although it looked like a medical premises from the outside, the horrific practices that went on inside was beyond human comprehension.

The facilities at the Heda Clinic has been called to question.

Not until police arrested him along with 32 pregnant girls aged between 18 and 22, Dr Orikara ran an illegal business that involved getting girls deliver babies for monetary rewards. The shocking thing about the whole story is that the offender, Dr Orikara, in the past, had been arrested for a similar crime alongside another woman in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State. The arrest was made in 2007 and the police charged Dr. Orikara to court for child trafficking and running an illegal clinic. Unfortunately, the case was thrown out by the judge because there was no solid evidence against him.

Dr. Orikara is now in police custody and this time around authorities are hoping to convict him for good. Abia Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Geoffrey Ogbonna, who confirmed his detention, indicated that Orikara’s statement strongly supported the belief of the police that he was involved in child trafficking even though he claimed he only took care of the girls until their delivery period.

To further confirm the suspicion of the police, one of the arrested pregnant ladies has given a statement on how male babies were sold for N30,000 while females went for a measly N20,000.Further revelations have revealed that the mothers do not see their babies after they are born and that individuals who introduce the pregnant girls to the clinic were rewarded with N5, 000 each.

The hospital has also been discovered to have poor facilities and lack of qualified personnel has resulted in the death of at least no fewer than seven pregnant ladies per week.

The pregnant girls were cramped into unkempt rooms with decaying amenities. Each of them got N5,000 weekly for maintenance. Upon giving birth, they were paid off about N30,000 for baby boys and N20,000 for girls while the doctor smiled to the banks after selling male babies for N400,000 and girls at N350,000.
